Ranging in date from the 18th to the 20th centuries the paintings help to tell the story of the history and culture here.

Due to poor storage practices earlier in the Mission’s history, many of the paintings are in need of conservation. Conservation, however, is an expensive process. As funds become available, often through private donations for specific works of art, Mission staff has the paintings cleaned and conserved, one by one. See conservation in action.

To get involved with funding for painting conservation, join the Mission San Juan Capistrano Art Guild. Both works of art, “Our Lady of Guadalupe” (artist unknown), and “Our Lady of Sorrows” (artist unknown), date to the late 1700s, and were in need of cleaning and inpainting due to minor paint losses. Both paintings also have text at the bottom that was obscured due to discoloration, dirt, and paint loss. Our conservators at Fine Art Conservation Laboratory in Santa Barbara, California were contracted for this project. The two artworks are scheduled to be returned to the Mission this spring in better condition and ready to be enjoyed by the public.

To get involved with painting conservation projects, please make a donation online at missionsjc.com, or contact our Museum Registrar, Jennifer Ring at jring@missionsjc.com, or (949) 234-1369.

In Need of Conservation

        Donate

    <a id="button-block_31b882054356daf3f433d20ab20d91bd" href="mailto:mlawrence-adams@missionsjc.com"
        class="block-button btn bg-primary-green text-white font-bold mb-5 mr-4 px-8 max-w-full"
        target=""
        style="background-color: #5caea8; Years of poor handling and environmental conditions led to its deterioration. In 1973, the then pastor of the Mission, Monsignor Vincent Lloyd Russell recognized the need for conservation but the Mission lacked the necessary funds for treatment. Monsignor Russell then directed parishioner and artist William Maldonado to paint a replica.

<p
