Mission San Juan Capistrano is pleased to offer onsite events for a day of learning and fun for all ages. Plan to visit us in person in the fall when we recognize Indigenous People’s Day and celebrate the history and culture of the local Acjachemen people by ringing the historic bells. Or join us at the Mission in spring when we welcome the world-famous swallows back to Capistrano with special performances, community presentations, lectures and more. In remembrance of the Earthquake of 1812 and the 40 baptized Native Americans who perished as a result of the Great Stone Church’s collapse, the historic bells will toll at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Mission bell ringers toll the bells for each victim who perished while the given Acjachemen and Spanish names of each victim is read in remembrance.

At Mission San Juan Capistrano, St. Joseph’s Day and the Return of the Swallows Celebration is a world-renowned tradition celebrating the annual return of the famous swallows to Capistrano. The day includes a historic bell ringing ceremony, mariachi music, community presentations, Native American storytelling, a presentation by cliff swallow expert Dr. Charles Brown, food, and more.  Visit www.missionsjc.com for more information.
